He created Mt. Gox, the first major bitcoin exchange, in 2010 and sold it a year later, before it was hacked.
In 2012, McCaleb cofounded Ripple but soon left following disagreements with his fellow founders.
Two years later, he cofounded Stellar, a rival blockchain network focused on cross-border payments.
McCaleb is now focused on Vast, the space-station startup he founded in 2021 and has largely funded himself.
He and his wife, scientist and entrepreneur Seemay Chou, have committed the majority of their wealth to scientific research and other philanthropic causes.
Before entering crypto, McCaleb created the file-sharing service eDonkey2000, which was sued by major record companies over copyright infringement.
Most of McCaleb's wealth stems from selling much of the original 9 billion XRP he pocketed as a Ripple cofounder. He sold his last coins in 2022.
